What you are looking at

Lēʻahi / Diamond Head is the famous crater profile at the eastern edge of Waikīkī. It is a volcanic tuff cone, a coastal lookout, a historic military site, and one of Oʻahu’s most recognizable landmarks.

The crater formed roughly 300,000 years ago during a single explosive eruption. Ash and fine particles settled and hardened into tuff, leaving the broad saucer-shaped crater visible today.

The summit trail was built in 1908 as part of Oʻahu’s coastal defense system. The route climbs from the crater floor through switchbacks, stairs, and a tunnel toward fire-control and observation structures connected to Fort Ruger and the island’s early twentieth-century defense network.

Reservations Non-resident entry and parking reservations are required through the official State Parks reservation system.
Trail feel Short but steep. Expect sun, exposed sections, uneven surfaces, stairs, and a tunnel.
Respect Stay on the trail, do not collect rocks or plants, pack out trash, and treat place names and stories with care.
